German Ricardo Mejia was born in Cali, Colombia 1966 and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As a young child, his artistic mother enrolled him in art school with Maestro Daniel Romero Lozano. The joy of learning and discovering his passion for art stands out from that early life period.
This passion only grew as he progressed through school. Early on, he realized that he could better grasp other subjects and focus while doodling or drawing during lectures. Every notebook had drawings on top of notes because, through the expression of art and structure, he found that static ideas could come to life. During high school at Cardinal Gibbons High School, he found direction for this aptitude under the guidance of “Father Pala” (RIP), who saw German’s potential and encouraged his continued growth as an artist.
To his father, however, a traditional Colombian patriarch and successful business magnate, choosing art as a career meant starvation. So intense was this judgment - that in his youth, German believed this viewpoint as well. To avoid disgracing himself and his family, he followed the expected path to achieve a business degree in the United States. Despite this, any additional college money for food and books, he would use to enroll in as many art classes as he could afford at Florida Atlantic University. In 1990, he graduated with an International Business degree and went to work for Dad at one of his businesses (a poultry farm and chicken processing plant). This arrangement lasted just one year before moving on to work at a Fortune 500 company in the United States and starting a family.
Not by design, his professional career has been in automotive paint, pigments, and colorants at three different paint companies, exporting these products worldwide. Through these positions, he realized that art is a universal culture.
Family and close friends have been admirers of privately commissioned works over the years. However, the 2020 pandemic and associated restrictions limiting business travel created a unique opportunity. German started pursuing his true passion and lifelong dream of creating art. His oldest daughter, as a surprise Valentine’s gift, created a webpage and launched an Instagram account with photos she’d taken of some of his work!
German has always gravitated into abstract-expressionist art, often applying different styles, techniques, and mediums. He appreciates energy, action, and dynamic movement, so most of his work shows plenty of fast lines & scratches that form and shape what he’s looking for in his head.
He communicates through his work, allowing the viewer to analyze his paintings and feel the energy he puts into them. German believes that art is the most profound silent expression, an obsession that is constantly challenging him. To him, there’s not a better feeling in the world than communicating with his creator on the canvas!
Jackson Pollock and Elaine De Kooning are two of his favorite artistic influences.
